About CEW

Kamo High School, under the banner  of Community Education Whangarei (CEW), is now the only school-based ACE provider in Northland.  Our programme is partially funded by the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) and remaining costs are covered by course fees.

Our role is to provide a service to the local community whereby people can learn new skills in a non-threatening, fun environment.  We concentrate on short courses for busy people.  The classes are mainly run in the evenings together with some weekend classes and we are pleased to be able to utilise the school’s facilities after-hours.  Classes are aimed at adults (those under 16 years are not eligible to attend government subsidised courses and school students 16 or over need to complete an exemption form).  If enrolling a student please check eligibility.

We offer a variety of courses suitable for people wanting to learn new skills, try a new hobby, learn a language before travelling overseas or for those new to the area it is a great way to meet people.  Our classes are low-key and sociable and provide people with a second chance at learning.

Tutors are skilled in their particular field.  Many are teachers or have relevant training qualifications.  We are always looking for new tutors and new ideas for courses and welcome any suggestions.

Our aim is to encourage lifelong learning and to support all adults in achieving their learning potential.  Our philosophy can best be summed up by a quote from Albert Einstein:

“I never teach my pupils; I only provide conditions in which they can learn.”
