ABOUT CEW

The aim of CEW (Community Education Whangarei) is to encourage lifelong learning and to support all adults in achieving their learning potential.
CEW is the only school based Adult Community Education (ACE) provider now operating in Northland with classes mainly held onsite at Kamo High School in Whangarei.
Funding is received from the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) for some classes, with the remainder of costs being met through course fees. Classes are aimed at adults, however those under 16 years may qualify for an exemption. If enrolling a student please check eligibility.

CEW concentrates on short courses for busy people. There are both evening classes and weekend workshops available. A variety of courses are offered each term aimed at people wanting to learn new skills, try a new hobby, learn a language or for those new to the area it is a great way to meet people.

Classes are low-key and social, and provide people with a second chance at learning. Whilst many courses are repeated each term, new courses are regularly introduced to keep the programme fresh.
Tutors are skilled in their particular field and are passionate about sharing their knowledge. Many tutors are teachers or have relevant training qualifications.
CEW is always looking for new tutors and new ideas for courses, and welcomes any suggestions.

The philosophy of CEW can best be summed up by a quote from Albert Einstein:

"I never teach my pupils;
I only provide conditions
in which they can learn.”

CEW Co-ordinator

Shona Hill

Hi, I'm Shona and I manage the overall operation of the adult community education programme.  As this is a sole-charge position there may be times when the office is unattended.  I apologise for any inconvenience if I am not in when you call.

I have been working with CEW for a number of years and believe that CEW plays an important role in the community by offering such a diverse range of options for adults wanting to continue to learn.

My main focus is on bringing tutors and students together
. CEW has some amazing tutors keen to share their knowledge and expertise.  Each term I look at what new courses can be introduced to give you, the students, as much variety as possible.

Suggestions for courses are always welcomed and if you, or someone you know, are interested in tutoring a course please do get in touch.

Learning takes us to new places when we immerse ourselves in new experiences that challenge us. By learning new skills we continue to grow and feel inspired.

I look forward to meeting you as you enrol and participate in the CEW classes.

Shona Hill
