PĀKĒ WORKSHOPPākē is a traditional Māori rain cape. Māori developed the pākē as an everyday garment made from hundreds of harakeke (flax) strips. In this one-day workshop you will learn how to make a smaller version that can be used as a wall hanging. All materials provided, additional $5 koha required for flax.

INTRODUCTION to FLAX WEAVINGThis hands-on workshop is aimed at beginners and will introduce you to the basic skills necessary for weaving flax. These skills, once they are well understood, form the basis for more advanced weaving. In this one-day workshop you will learn the basic weaving skills required to create a small two or four cornered basket using kōrari (flax). In addition you will learn about Tikanga Kōrari, the traditional guidelines around harvesting and weaving flax, and how to prepare the flax whenu (strips) for weaving. Taking photographs and videos of the teaching demonstrations will be encouraged to support your practice after the class. Raewyn has been weaving for over eight years. Flax will be supplied and equipment provided. Spaces are limited.
